Thank You from St. James

Thank you! For putting away the glamour, glitter and greed
To hear the clamour of suffering need and the jackhammer
Of pain in our insane world; thank you! for striving
To relieve and thriving in generosity, putting away sick
Pomposity and paucity of heart-feeling, even in the face
Of the monstrosity of ecclesial wickedness and corporate
Animosity; thank you! for not merely passing by the hungry
With mere curiosity and disgusting loquacity as if the person
Did not exist; thank you! for stopping, hoping and helping,
For lifting him up, giving him good food upon which to sup,
For smiling and loving and praying, too; indeed, thank you!
For helping your sisters and brothers in need, for planting
Seeds of love from above, because even though you didn’t
Realize, and it may come as a real surprize, in doing all
Of this, you were feeding, clothing and meeting the need
… of our Lord Jesus
So, yes, thank you!

If a brother or sister is naked and lacks daily food, and one of you says to them, ‘Go in peace; keep warm and eat your fill’, and yet you do not supply their bodily needs, what is the good of that? So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead. But someone will say, ‘You have faith and I have works.’ Show me your faith without works, and I by my works will show you my faith.  (James 2. 15-18 NRSV, emphasis mine)
