End-Beginning Caregiving

What an awesome privilege to care
For life in the village of our world;
It is a vintage wine of real ministry
When you offer up the cup of water
To one whose hands cannot hold
And enfold their fingers anymore;
When you gently feed the dying
And tenderly tend to their needs;
When you embrace the loved ones
And face their sorrows in solidarity;
When you act as a medium of love
Throughout the tedium of the days
That grow ever darker and starker,
Becoming God’s light in their night;
All of this is premium ministration
Creating an Elysium in the dying
In defiance of death by the death
And resurrection of Life Himself,
Whom you carry and joyfully share
In the activity of caring ministry. . .
And so often, then, the end of life
Becomes the new beginning
With heavenly bells ringing
And all of the angels singing!
