America and the Ringing Bells of Hell

She was a black widow, her life hidden in the shadow;
He was a scorpion, who scorned all wise opinion;
She wanted to be queen, and he to be the king,
So they fought, brought their promises to the people,
Bought support, and hung on each and every report…
But did it really matter to the kingdom doomed?
People were divided by race and profession,
By creed and confession, by greed and aspiration,
And so God intoned from His judgment throne
An indictment against wickedness sown and shown
With pride by people both to the right and left side
In sight of the whole world while trying to hide
Behind false ideologies born of the same source
In the course of their history, but self-inflicted,
Deadly disease brought their story to an end
With relative ease and no more glory to show…
And what of the scorpion and the black widow?
One would rule at last as last till an unimaginable
Blast into the long chronicles of nations risen
And fallen into the well of hell…
But the warning bell had been sounded!

If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand. (Mark 3. 24-25 NRSV)

However, if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves, pray, search for me, and turn from their evil ways, then I will hear their prayer from heaven, forgive their sins, and heal their country. (2 Chronicles 7.14 GW)
